What heritage painting covers in Camden

Victorian and Georgian exteriors
Camden's Victorian and Edwardian frontages carry a lot of exterior detail. Stucco rendered ground floors, moulded cornices, timber sash boxes and cast-iron railings, over old lime and cement renders that are often chalky underneath. Paint laid straight onto that lets go within a winter.
So the preparation is the job. We scrape back flaking paint, cut out and patch blown render, brush down powdery surfaces and seal them with a stabilising solution, then build the finish back up in breathable masonry systems that let the wall release moisture rather than trapping it behind a film. Exterior work is weather-led. We book it for the drier months, roughly April through October, when masonry paint can cure properly between coats, and we move a start date rather than paint onto a damp wall.
Period interiors and original mouldings
Inside, these houses have high ceilings, deep cornicing, ceiling roses, picture rails and panelled doors, and plaster that has shifted over the decades. We rake out and fill settlement cracks, stabilise old lath-and-plaster and prime bare patches before any colour goes on, so the finish does not craze back along the joints within a season.
The detail is cut in by hand rather than rolled past. That is slower, and it is the difference between cornice work that reads crisp and cornice work buried under another thick coat. We use trade-grade Dulux, Crown and Johnstone's, with Farrow & Ball where a heritage scheme calls for it, and can plan the palette first through a colour consultation. Sash window restoration
Original box sashes are the feature most often lost to repeated repainting. Decades of build-up clogs the glazing bars, sashes seize in their frames, cords snap and putty cracks. We treat these as restoration rather than a recoat, drawing back the old paint, freeing the sashes, renewing cord and making good split cills before rebuilding a clean, sealed finish.

Conservation areas and listed buildings
A lot of this work sits on conservation streets, and some of it on listed properties. We have painted plenty of both. What we can offer is experience of the stock and its quirks, not a heritage accreditation, and we would rather say that plainly than imply a credential we do not hold.
In practice it means the finish should suit the age of the building and its neighbours. On a listed property or a formal terrace the existing scheme is normally kept as it is, and any change needs checking with the council and your freeholder before work is booked. Interior decoration is not usually affected in the same way. We will walk it with you at the survey and price only what is agreed.

Do you specialise in Victorian and Georgian properties?
Most of what we paint in Camden and North London is period stock, so yes in practice. Victorian and Edwardian terraces, Georgian townhouses and stucco-fronted villas make up the bulk of the work. That means lath-and-plaster, settlement cracks, original cornicing and timber box sashes rather than flat modern plasterboard.
Can you work on a listed building or in a conservation area?
We have worked on plenty of both, and we are straight about what that means. We hold no heritage accreditation. Consents are yours or your freeholder's to obtain, and on a listed property or a protected frontage the scheme is normally kept as it is. Check with the council before booking.
What paint do you use on old brick and lime render?
Older masonry needs a coating that lets moisture out rather than sealing it in.
